How to Stop Your Vacuum From Smelling in the First Place

A smelly vacuum isn't just unpleasant, it's a sign something's wrong. Regular cleaning stops odours from building up and keeps your vacuum working properly for longer. Whether you have pets, kids or a busy household, these tips will help.

Ways to prevent vacuum smells

Keep it clean

Empty the dust bin or bag after every use. Vacuums need good airflow to work, and a full bin blocks it. Clean filters, brush rolls and hoses regularly to prevent dust and hair build up.

Wash or replace filters

Check your vacuum manual to see if the filters are washable or need replacing. Filters help trap fine dust and odours. Wash with water or change every 3 - 6 months.

Untangle brushes

Cut away tangled hair and threads with scissors. Some models let you remove the roller brush for a proper clean. This helps reduce motor strain and smell.

Flush out hoses

Please ensure your vacuum hose does not contain any internal wiring before cleaning. Hoses connected to motorised power heads all have wires running through them.

If your hose does contain wiring, do not wash it with any liquid.

For hoses without internal wiring:
Disconnect the hose from the vacuum, run warm soapy water through it, rinse thoroughly and allow it to air dry completely before reattaching. This will help remove trapped debris and bacteria safely.

Clean robot vacuum sensors

Dusty sensors affect performance and cleaning quality. Wipe gently with a soft dry cloth to help your robot move and clean better.

Store in a dry, airy place

Avoid damp areas like laundry rooms. Moisture leads to mould and bad smells. A cool, well ventilated area helps your vacuum stay fresh.

Extra tip: Use a self cleaning robot vacuum

Smart robot vacuums auto empty the bin, clean their mop and alert you when filters need changing. They help reduce smells with less effort. It's a great option if you want more convenience and fewer odours in your home.

When to see a vacuum technician

If your vacuum smells or doesn't work right even after cleaning, there may be an internal issue. Stop using it and get it checked to avoid damage.
