Manual and Ultrasonic Cleaning for Laboratory and Hospital Use

In hospitals, theatres, dental rooms and laboratories, instruments and surfaces have to be cleaned before they are disinfected or sterilised, and the cleaner used at that stage matters. A strongly alkaline product can leave residue behind, and over time it can pit or corrode stainless steel and break down antistatic flooring. Whiteley Sonidet is a concentrated, pH-neutral liquid detergent made for exactly this part of the routine.

Its neutral pH lifts hospital and surgical soils without the corrosion risk that alkaline cleaners carry, and a built-in corrosion inhibitor reduces the chance of pitting on mixed-metal instruments. Because it is formulated to rinse away completely, instruments and surfaces are left free of detergent film before the next step. Hard or soft, the water supply makes little difference to the result.

Sonidet is a concentrate, so it is diluted with water before use. Make up a fresh diluted solution each day and do not keep it once the work is done.

General dilution: mix 5 mL of Sonidet per litre of water, which is 25 mL per 5 litres. Use this strength for instruments, theatre benches, dialysis equipment, laboratory glassware and environmental surfaces.

Ultrasonic cleaning: use the same 5 mL per litre strength, which is 50 mL in a 10 litre tank. Fill the tank first, add Sonidet, then start the machine and run your normal cycle. Change the water once it turns cloudy. Used this way it aligns with AS/NZS 4187 and AS/NZS 4815 for neutral cleaning of medical devices.

Manual instrument cleaning: clean, rinse and drain instruments before they go into an instrument-grade disinfectant or into the autoclave, and follow the instrument manufacturer's own cleaning instructions.

Rinse: rinse instruments and surfaces thoroughly after cleaning, so no detergent residue is left behind before disinfection or sterilisation.

Do not mix: do not mix Sonidet with other chemical.

Sonidet is not classified as a hazardous substance under GHS and carries no signal word or hazard statements. It can still cause eye irritation and reddening, so handle it with normal care.

Protective equipment: wear safety glasses or goggles to protect your eyes, and nitrile gloves or similar to protect your skin. Use the product in a well-ventilated area. A respirator is not usually necessary.

First aid: for eye contact, hold the eyelids apart and flush continuously with running water, and seek advice if irritation persists. For skin contact, remove contaminated clothing and rinse the skin, and seek medical advice if irritation occurs. If swallowed, do not induce vomiting, sip water if conscious, and phone the Poisons Information Centre on 131126.

Storage: store in the original container, kept tightly sealed, in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place below 30°C. Wash thoroughly after handling.

Spills: wear protective clothing, contain the spill with an absorbent material such as sand or vermiculite, and keep it out of stormwater drains and waterways. Collect and dispose of the material according to local regulations.

Environmental and disposal: dispose of in accordance with local council and regulatory requirements, and do not pour concentrated product into stormwater drains. Empty containers are recyclable and can be rinsed and recycled or handled by a licensed waste contractor. Refer to Section 13 of the current SDS for full disposal guidance.
