Agar Duro Acrylic Floor Sealer and Polish 5Lt

A marble foyer or a vinyl corridor wears out down the middle first, where the traffic walks. Scuffing and fine scratching dull the surface long before anything looks dirty, and on soft stone like marble and slate that damage arrives quickly. Once the surface itself is chewed up, mopping will not bring the shine back.

Duro is Agar's acrylic sealer and polish for marble, terrazzo and slate, and for vinyl tile, vinyl sheet and timber floors. Mopped onto a clean, stripped floor as a uniform liquid film, it dries to a transparent, tough plastic film that stands up to cleaning and foot traffic. Wear lands on the coating instead of the floor underneath, which is the whole point of sealing.

Why one sealer covers stone, vinyl and timber

The polymer is a metal cross-linked acrylic, and it bonds well to all types of stone, so the same drum that goes down on a terrazzo entry also handles the marble reception and the vinyl corridor behind it. On vinyl the film stays buffable while still being hard, which is an unusual pairing: Agar's field tests on vinyl tile floors showed appearance lifting through the day rather than fading off by knock-off time. Any buffing machine from 400 to 2500 rpm can be run over it.

Gloss is not the only measure on a commercial floor. Testing to AS 4666-2013 returned a mean dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.60 in dry conditions, well above the 0.40 generally accepted as the minimum for a dry non-slip floor. Key benefits:

Shine that survives foot traffic: The dried film takes the scuffing and scratching that would otherwise disfigure soft stone, so a marble or slate floor keeps its depth of shine while the coating wears instead.

Buffs back up instead of coming off: Hard and buffable at the same time, the film lets traffic marks be lifted with a machine anywhere from 400 to 2500 rpm, so a dull walkway does not automatically mean a strip and reseal.

Non-slip underfoot when dry: The AS 4666-2013 slip resistance test returned a mean dynamic coefficient of friction of 0.60 in dry conditions, against a generally accepted minimum of 0.40. That is the number a facility manager gets asked for when a floor turns glossy.

Order the right amount first go: Coverage runs 40 to 50 square metres per litre per coat, so one 5Lt bottle lays roughly 200 to 250 square metres of a single coat. Count the coats the floor needs, then count the bottles.

Comes off cleanly when the floor needs a reset: Removability is rated excellent with Agar strippers, so the recoat cycle can be started fresh without fighting the old film.

Where Duro can be used:

• Marble, terrazzo and slate floors
• Vinyl tiles and vinyl sheet flooring
• Timber floors

Not suitable for: nonporous ceramic and porcelain tiles. Acrylic sealers do not bond to them, so pre-test a single tile before sealing a whole floor and use Agar Stone Block if the film peels.

Prepare the floor first: Strip off adhesive, factory finish, built-up polish, wax and other soilage with Ultrastrip, Demolish or STR-36. Persistent waxes may need solvent stripping. A brand new floor gets stripped as well, because the protective film added at the time of manufacture will stop the new polish sticking. Rinse the floor and allow it to dry.

Marble, terrazzo and stone floors:

1. Fringe mop to remove dust, and check the floor is completely clean and wax-free.
2. Mop on one coat of Agar First Base, or two coats if the floor is very porous. Let the first coat dry for one hour and the second for 30 minutes.
3. Mop on 2 to 4 coats of Duro, leaving 30 minutes between coats so the film forms a good bond to the floor.
Vinyl and timber floors:

1. Dry burnish to even up the surface, then fringe mop to remove the dust.
2. Mop on 4 to 6 coats of Duro, allowing each coat to dry before the next one goes on.

Pre-test on ceramic or porcelain: Lay two coats of Duro on one tile. When the film is dry, stick adhesive packaging tape across the tile, press it down, then rip it off. Film still bonded means the floor can be sealed. Film that peels means the tiles cannot take Duro, and Stone Block is used instead.

Coverage: 40 to 50 square metres per litre, per coat.

Keeping the floor up: Mop with Agar Autoscrub or Scrub 'N' Shine, then buff to lift any traffic marks. Buffing machines from 400 to 2500 rpm all suit the film.

Cold weather: Avoid applying Duro to very cold floors, below 9 degrees C. Where a cold weather job cannot be avoided, lay very thin coats one hour apart.

Do not mix: Do not mix Duro with other cleaning products, in use or at disposal.
